Mud dirt thorns vines

We have gone apple picking before. But, none of us had ever been berry picking, even though berries are probably my favorite fruits, and the kids also devour them every week. So, when we realized that less than 20 miles away there was a place where we could pick our own strawberries – safely during COVID – it seemed like a perfect 50x50 as well as a good way to get the kids out of the house.

We woke up early on the weekend to be sure we were there when it opened, since it was the end of the season and berries were smaller and sparser. That all worked out in the end, as I love the flavor of small strawberries, and there were still plenty for picking. The kids and I each filled our own boxes.

We ate a ton of them plain – a whole bunch just on the ride back to the house.

But we also made a delicious summer strawberry cake (so easy we made it twice this summer), strawberry drop biscuits, and strawberry-lemon sorbet (a favorite of the kids).

Next on our list, if we can find still find it: raspberry picking!
